SDR-Control for macOS Adds APRS Capabilities

The latest update of SDR-Control for macOS (v2.9.85) introduces Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) support for Icom radios. This marks a significant step for macOS-based operators, making it easier to integrate APRS into everyday amateur radio use.

What is APRS?

APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) is a digital communication protocol widely used in amateur radio. While it is best known for real-time position reporting, APRS also supports text messaging, weather data sharing, telemetry, and even email gateways. Operators can exchange short messages, send status reports, and in many cases connect with global networks like WinLink for extended communication capabilities. Despite the growth of internet-based tools, APRS remains popular thanks to its simplicity, reliability, and wide adoption in the ham radio community.

New APRS Features in SDR-Control for macOS

With the 2.9.85 update, users gain access to several powerful APRS functions:

  • Receive and monitor APRS packets – All incoming transmissions are displayed in a clear list, making it easy to follow activity in real time.
  • Visualize APRS traffic on a map – Positions and movement of nearby APRS stations can be plotted, helping operators see routes and coverage at a glance.
  • Compose and send messages – Send not only standard APRS messages but also Email, SMS, and even WinLink through the APRS network.
  • Broadcast information – Share position reports and status updates quickly and reliably.

A Look at the New Features

 APRS RX List

The new APRS RX List provides a structured view of all incoming packets, making it easy to track local activity in real time.

APRS data is brought to life with an integrated map that shows stations, their positions, and even their movement routes.

Message Composer

A simple interface makes drafting APRS messages straightforward, whether sending to another station or via Email, SMS, or WinLink.

Kenwood TH-D74

In testing, a message sent from SDR-Control was successfully received by a Kenwood TH-D74, demonstrating reliable cross-device communication.

Coming to iOS and Beyond

These APRS features are also planned to become available in the iOS apps. Currently, APRS is being considered for the Icom apps, since models like the IC-705 and IC-9700 include VHF/UHF capabilities that are well suited for APRS use.

A question for the community remains: should APRS support also be added to the apps for FlexRadio, Yaesu, Kenwood, and Elecraft? User feedback will help determine whether the feature expands beyond Icom devices.
